We’re not entirely sure where or how Random Acts of Kindness Day originated. Its focus is on making the world a better place by encouraging people to do something kind and unexpected for someone else – and that’s something we can definitely get on board with!

Like #ReclaimSocial, it’s about using the power of social media to spread positivity and to encourage people to be kind. It trended today on Twitter and here are some lovely tweets we spotted from charities and what you can learn from them.

Alzheimer’s Society

Although this card was given at Christmas, it’s a lovely way to share how a random act of kindness meant so much to a family whose nan has dementia.

Tip: Think about your existing content and how you can repurpose it for different awareness days.

Children’s Society

Sometimes it’s ok to not push your own agenda (even when relevant). We love how Children’s Society shared some practical tips on how to be kind without necessarily linking to their services.

Tip: Don’t have your own images to use? Use GIFs!

Islamic Relief

This tweet is a great example of linking an awareness day to your cause. As a humanitarian cause, kindness is key to what they do. And we love this image of happy, smiling children!

Tip: Use a great quote that links back to your charity or cause.

Mental Health Foundation

What a genius way to both drive traffic to your website, to get people to do something kind and to spread the word! We got number 21 from their generator, which said ‘Send an inspirational quote to a friend.’

Tip: Think of how you can drive traffic to your website by offering something useful.

Young Minds

Sometimes simple is best (when coupled with a totally shareable image). This very simple tweet from Young Minds reminding people to be kind to themselves has had hundreds of retweets.

Tip: What would make your tweet shareable? How can you make it stand out?

Herts Young Homeless

We love these practical tips from Herts Young Homeless on how you can show kindness to someone who is homeless. It doesn’t cost anything to just say hello and ask how they’re doing yet it would make such a difference to their day.

Tip: Think about simple and practical tips you could offer your audience. People love to share this type of content because it shows them in a good light.

Maggie’s Centres

Trending awareness days can be a great opportunity to inspire your supporters to make a donation (think: Giving Tuesday). We love how Maggie’s Centre encouraged their supporters to be kind by making a donation.

Tip: If you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Battersea

We think this was a clever opportunity to thank a corporate sponsor for a gift. We love the photos too!

Tip: Don’t flood your social feeds with thanks to corporates. Think of clever ways to thank them by tagging on to a relevant trend.

RNIB

We love this use of Quote RT from RNIB to share an experience from someone who is blind or partially sighted of how the public assisted them. They asked their followers to share any random acts of kindness they had experienced from strangers.

Tip: If you don’t have your own content to share, think about how you could use Quote RT to share another relevant tweet. And asking a question always helps with engagement!
